Edwin B. Athearn started Athearn Marine Agency in 1946 using a spare backroom in his home for an office in Woods Hole, MA. Bill Daniels, who grew up on Cape Cod and fished from Provincetown and Chatham joined Athearn in the late sixties after a fishing related injury kept him ashore.

Nelson Long, a former banker, had opened an office in New Bedford in 1976 that specialized in arranging financing for the fishing industry. As the industry became more complex, financial expertise became a necessary part of the buying and selling of vessels.

The three men joined forces in 1978 with Long and Daniels taking over the business from Athearn in 1978.

In 2004 the company was purchased by the TriNav Group with Nelson Long and Bill Daniels continuing to work full-time with the company.

John Moran joined Athearn Marine in 2006 bringing with him 16 years of business marketing and management experience. Bill Rocha joined the company in 2008. Bill has years of experience in the accounting field.

The business has always specialized in the sale of commercial fishing vessels and related services and in recent years those services have been expanded to include the transfer of state and federal fisheries permits.
